Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios’ upcoming comic adaptation “Doctor Strange” is head for a box-office opening between $60-75 million according to early tracking figures.
That’s on the lower scale of Marvel Studios film openings, but on par with a ‘first title’ in a Marvel franchise – “Thor” and “Captain America” opened to $65 million each and “Ant-Man” opened to $57 million. On the higher end “Iron Man” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” both opened just shy of $100 million.
If it lands the higher end of estimates it would beat out FOX’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($65.7 million) and would be a strong achievement for an original film based on a relatively unfamiliar comic-book property not previously seen on the big screen. It would also certainly be the best post-Summer opening so far.
