Negotiations are in the early stages but it seems Lionsgate is planning to wrap up the “Divergent” film series with a TV movie and a spinoff series rather than the planned fourth and final theatrical release “The Divergent Series: Ascendant”.
Variety reports that according to a source with knowledge of the situation, the film series with the current cast is being retooled and will now finish up with a telemovie. At the same time new cast members will be introduced and they will segue into a standalone television series set in the same post-apocalyptic world.
What’s not clear is if stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort and others will return for the “Ascendant” television movie as no deals have been made as yet, while the studio has yet to pitch the project to networks. At last report Lee Toland Krieger had been tapped to direct the film.
Lionsgate’s television group will handle production with the new series to air on either a traditional or streaming network. The surprise announcement comes in the wake of the failure of the third film in the series, “The Divergent Series: Allegiant,” which made $179 million worldwide – a far cry from the near $300 million haul of its two predecessors.
