“District 9” and “Elysium” filmmaker Neill Blomkamp shocked the hell out of everyone last night when he used social media to drop a massive stash of concept art for a film project he says he has given up on. Not just any film either, but what appears to be a direct follow-up to James Cameron’s 1986 effort “Aliens” that seemingly ignores both “Alien 3” and “Alien Resurrection.
It began with the tweet: “Was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though… Woulda rocked. Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created.” along with an image of the Queen Alien. Further concept art showed off Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley and Michael Biehn’s Hicks with facial scarring (which would set this after “Aliens”), along with scenes set inside what seems to be Weyland Yutani headquarters. It also looks like the crashed ship wreckage from LV-426 has been moved there. Capping things off is a sketch of Ripley wearing alien-style armor.
Before you go getting too excited, Blomkamp says these shots have “nothing to do with the studio” and “They didn’t really even know I was working on it”. He also says “I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work.” You can check out various shots on his instagram account below.
