Disney Pictures yesterday became the first studio this year to cross the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office.
Disney managed to do most of this with just four films, one of which being “The Lone Ranger” which had a soft debut and currently sits at $60 million.
The other three though – “Iron Man 3” with $406.6 million, “Oz the Great and Powerful” with $235 million and “Monsters University” with $227 million – have been great success stories. The company has also managed another $76 million from leftover 2012 titles like “Lincoln” and “Wreck-It-Ralph”.
It effectively demonstrates how, by shrinking and consolidating their slate to just a handful of titles, Disney has successfully been able to turn each film launch into an event.
