Was demand for Marvel super hero “Luke Cage” so high it brought down the world’s largest streaming service?
All thirteen episode of the new series, the third collaboration between Marvel Studios and Netflix, debuted on Friday and within a day the entire Netflix service went down for over two hours on early Saturday afternoon in the U.S. and United Kingdom.
Netflix did not respond to requests for comment and won’t reveal viewing statistics, but the speculation is putting the blame on demand for “Luke Cage”. Netflix was quick to acknowledge the problem, tweeting they were aware of the problem and were working to resolve it. Some markets were still encountering difficulty on Saturday afternoon.
Netflix took the opportunity to make fun of the outage as well with the official accounts for both “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage” tweeting about it (see below). To coincide with the show’s release, Marvel has also released the soundtrack single “Bulletproof Love” by Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad which you can hear below.
