“Deadpool” continues to obliterate all box office expectations as its first day haul has exceeded all expectations.
Going into the weekend, the studio was suggesting a $60 million domestic haul over the four-day holiday while rival studios were pegging a figure closer to $70 million. Those were revised yesterday up to $90-100 million in the wake of $12 million in previews on Thursday night and a projected $35 million opening day haul.
Well the final figures for Friday are in and the numbers have been revised upwards again. The superhero comedy pulled in $47.5 million on Friday, including the $12.7 million in Thursday night previews, which is the highest opening day ever for an R-rated film.
That also puts it on track for a Presidents Day four-day weekend haul of more than $130 million. That’s literally double the studio’s initially conservative estimate and easily topping the $93 million record for that weekend made last year by “Fifty Shades of Grey”. More as it comes.
