The filmmaking team behind Deadpool have been talking about why they want Cable to feature in the forthcoming sequel, and what they are looking for in the actor that will portray him.
With the “Deadpool” sequel now official and the first film hitting home video formats shortly, the film’s director Tim Miller has been speaking a bit about where the franchise will go next and the inclusion of fan-favorite Cable. Speaking with IGN, Miller describes what they are looking for in the actor that will portray him and why they are including the character:
“There’s a lot about Cable’s history that I like because he’s so intertwined with the world of the X-Men. Why he was put together with Deadpool – other than that he was in a comic that wasn’t selling well and Deadpool was in a comic that wasn’t selling well so they put them together – it’s the same reason we had Colossus; he’s a straight man. And I think Deadpool needs a straight man. Cable is the ultimate, archetypal, silent, strong and cynical warrior, which Deadpool is not.”
Meanwhile screenwriter Rhett Reese adds: “strength, gravitas, a purposefulness that Deadpool doesn’t have. Deadpool’s kind of got ADD, and we think of Cable as someone who locks onto something and is going to get that thing solved no matter what.” In as separate interview with CBR, his co-writer Paul Wernick spoke about where the sequel currently stands in production:
“We’re writing the sequel, so that’s ongoing. We would very much like to be a part of whatever this character is a part of moving forward. So I think that’s certainly in our heads. We just love the character so much. It’s the most fun character we’ve ever written. Interestingly, the easiest character we’ve ever written. Because I think he is the most fun to write, so it’s such a pleasure to sit down at the keyboard, that we would like to live with him for a very long time.”
“Deadpool 2” isn’t expected in cinemas until 2018.
