Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment are teaming to launch a new DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018 with two high-profile comic book-themed original TV series set to serve as its foundation.
One will be the long in the works live-action series “Titans” from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns and Sarah Schechter. The other will be “Young Justice: Outsiders,” a revival of cult animated series “Young Justice” from Warner Bros Animation.
The new service will be the second major new service launched by Warner Bros Digital Networks following the recent launch of the animation-driven Boomerang. The DC-branded platform is designed as an immersive experience with fan interaction and will encompass comics as well as TV series.
“Titans” follows Batman’s former protege Dick Grayson who emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of young soon-to-be superheroes that includes Starfire, Raven and others. It was originally ordered as a pilot for TNT, but a regime change at that network saw it scrapped.
“The Flash” and “Arrow” producer Berlanti was brought onboard and helped retool the show. An SVOD provider reportedly expressed strong interest, but Warners has opted to make both “Titans” and the ‘third’ season of “Young Justice” as the launch programs for this service.z
The good news comes the same day as NBC has quietly pulled its DC superhero-themed comedy series “Powerless” from both its Tuesday night lineup and the network’s website. No official announcement has been made in regards to the future of the show or the scheduling, but odds are not good.
