“Hamilton,” “Blindspotting” and “Velvet Buzzsaw” actor Daveed Diggs is in final negotiations to play Sebastian the Crab in Disney’s live-action remake of their 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid”.
Rob Marshall is helming the feature which also stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder.
Sebastian is Triton’s advisor and sings the show-stopping number “Under the Sea.” Samuel E. Wright voiced the character in the original.
The key role of Prince Eric hasn’t yet been cast, though “Krypton” actor Cameron Cuffe is one of several said to be testing for the part.
Alan Menken will update his score and compose a new song with lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Marshall, Miranda, Marc Platt and John DeLuca are producing.
