Empire magazine is running a feature issue for Zack Snyder’s “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” a cover story that includes a couple of new official stills from the film that have since been scanned in. One photo in particular has caused all sorts of excitement though.
The film’s trailers have shown scenes from what’s since been revealed to be a nightmare sequence of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) in which he sees the fictional nation of Kandahar laid to ruin. The Comic Con trailer also included a shot from this sequence of flying Parademons, creatures that tie back to DC Comics supervillain and Apokolips ruler Darkseid.
Several sites have posted scans of the photos today (hi-res versions should be out soon) which give us another indicator of the potential presence of Darkseid in at least one of the “Justice League” two-part films. The shot has Batman overlooking a gigantic Omega symbol which ties back into the character’s mythology.
The same issue also has quotes from Snyder about why he chose to use the villain of Doomsday in the film and how Wonder Woman fits into the action:
“To go up against heroes like Batman and Superman, we wanted to introduce one of the DC Universe’s most iconic and powerful villain. He is essentially an unstoppable force. He poses a real threat to the world within the film.
You [also] learn pretty early on that Lex is interested in metahuman existence, and that there might be some relationship between that investigation and the appearance of Diana Prince.”
In related news, writer and director Kevin Smith spoke with Variety at Sundance this week where the topic of this film came up and he was asked why he thinks his old friend Ben Affleck is perfect casting:
“Right away, he’s the best looking Batman we’ve ever seen. He’s moving the way the character moves in the comics, punching out six people in the span of two seconds. So, [Zack Snyder] is kind of nailing that version of it.
The hardest thing to nail about Batman is Bruce Wayne, because that’s where you’ve got no mask and you’ve got to be a human being. But that dude is Bruce Wayne, so he’s born to play that role. Everything I’ve seen so far has been phenomenal. I think he’ll be our best Batman.”
“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens March 25th.
