After more than three decades, the sequel to Jim Henson and Frank Oz’s fantasy classic “The Dark Crystal” is coming – sadly only in comic book form.
BOOM! Studios and The Henson Company have announced plans to do a twelve-issue comic mini-series titled “The Power of the Dark Crystal” based on the unproduced screenplay for the sequel to the 1982 fantasy movie.
Set decades after events of the original, Jen and Kira are distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer in touch with the needs of the people. This provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. That mission might also restore the Skeksis as well.
British writer Si Spurrier will pen the comic adaptation from David Odell, Annette Odell and Craig Pearce’s script for the aborted follow-up from over a decade ago which had the likes of Genndy Tartakovsky and Brian Froud attached at various times. Kelly and Nichole Matthews will provide the artwork for the comic.
Lisa Henson, President and CEO of the Jim Henson Company says in a statement: “The creativity that went into writing and designing the feature film was such that we wanted our fans to be able to see and enjoy it now through this comic book series. We are very proud of the story that the screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce wrote. Our partners at Archaia and BOOM! Studios are the only people we could trust to expand and illustrate the story, and we are thrilled that it will soon see the light of day!”
The first issue will be released digitally and in comic stores February 15th.
