“The Shawshank Redemption” director and former “The Walking Dead” producer Frank Darabont has been selected to direct the upcoming “Snow White and the Huntsman” sequel at Universal Pictures.
Darabont has beaten out both Gavin O’Connor (“Warrior”) and Andy Muschietti (“Mama”) to helm the fairy tale sequel, the pair previously reported as the top contenders on the studio short list. Whilst the decision has been made, the filmmaker has reportedly not yet been presented with an offer.
The reason Darabont though was selected was apparently he pitched a new take on the sequel which puts the focus on Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman character. As a result, Kristen Stewart is not expected to return as Snow White or, if she does, it’ll be in a significantly reduced capacity. It also means a change of title.
Filming on the project will happen soon though, Hemsworth’s schedule is clear post-“Avengers: Age of Ultron” so he’ll be able to shoot this and Darabont will have it ready in time for the studio’s planned Summer 2016 release date.
