Damon In, Goddard Out Of “Martian”

Matt Damon is in and filmmaker Drew Goddard is out of the upcoming sci-fi tale “The Martian” at 20th Century Fox.

“Cabin in the Woods” helmer Goddard recently hopped onboard Sony’s “Sinister Six” movie and Fox has decided not to wait for him.

Instead, they plan to move quickly and are currently seeking a director that Damon would be willing to work with.

An adaptation of Andy Weir’s e-book, the story follows an astronaut who becomes stranded on Mars and must figure out how to survive long enough to return to Earth. Despite the setting, insiders say it’s quite different from the tone of Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity”.

Though he’s the studio’s top choice, Damon is not officially attached at this time. Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood are producing.
