Cumberbatch Joins Showtime’s “Melrose”

Showtime has ordered the five-part limited series “Melrose” which will both star and be executive produced by “Sherlock” and “Doctor Strange” leading man Benedict Cumberbatch.

Showtime and Sky Atlantic are collaborating on the series based on the Patrick Melrose series of semi-autobiographical novels written by Edward St. Aubyn. Each episode will follow one of the five novels, and take place over the course of a few intense days in the life of its protagonist.

An evisceration of the upper class, the story follows Patrick Melrose who is an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy who struggles to overcome drug addiction and the damage inflicted by a horribly abusive father and the mother who tacitly condoned the behaviour.

Settings range from southern France in the 1960s, New York in the 1980s and Britain in the early 2000. Shooting will take place on location in all three places starting in August.

David Nicholls (“Far From the Madding Crowd”) is writing all five episodes of the TV adaptation and a search is underway for a director.
