Russell Crowe, George MacKay, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis set to lead a stellar cast for “Macbeth” and “Assassin’s Creed” director Justin Kurzel’s new film “True History of the Kelly Gang” for Romulus Entertainment, Film4, Screen Australia, and Film Victoria.
MacKay (“Pride,” “How I Live Now”) will portray notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, who died at the age of 25 in 1880 in a shootout with Australian police. Travis Fimmel, Sean Keenan, Dacre Montgomery, Harry Greenwood, Thomasin McKenzie, and Earl Cave co-star in the film which is said to be “unsentimental, brutal, raw and visceral”.
Kurzel helms from a script by Shaun Grant based on Peter Carey’s Booker Prize-winning novel while Liz Watts, Hal Vogel and Brad Feinstein will produce. Filming begins in March in Australia with Transmission Films releasing the movie locally.
The Ned Kelly story has been adapted for the screen several times before, most notably the 1970 film starring Mick Jagger, and Gregor Jordan’s 2003 film starring Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, Naomi Watts and Geoffrey Rush.
