Criterion Teases Several 2017 Titles

Every year on New Year’s Day, The Criterion Collection unveils a doodle containing cryptic hints towards numerous titles they plan to release on DVD and Blu-ray that year.

They’ve now released the January 2017 edition and, the folks at The Criterion Cast have broken it down as much as they can using evidence from Criterion’s website, FilmStruck, and sister company Janus Films.

Amongst the films they’ve figured out are on the way are John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles,” Jacques Audiard’s “Dheepan,” Terry Zwigoff’s “Ghost World,” Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Stalker,” Nicholas Ray’s “They Live By Night,” Frank Borzage’s “A Farewell To Arms,” Juzo Itami’s “Tampopo,” Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Mysterious Object at Noon,” Chantal Akerman’s “Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels,” Wim Wenders’ documentary “Buena Vista Social Club” and Nicolas Ribowski’s “The Marseilles Trilogy: Cesar, Fanny & Marius”.

They join the already announced January to March titles such as Richard Linklater’s “Before” trilogy, along with “Blow-Up,” “45 Years,” “Being There,” “Cameraperson,” “Mildred Pierce,” “The Tree of Wooden Clogs,” “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” “His Girl Friday,” “Fox and His Friends,” “Something Wild,” and “Black Girl”.
