Wendy Crewson (“The Santa Clause,” “What Lies Beneath,” “Away From Her”) will play activist Mary Botha in the biopic “Winnie” for Equinoxe Films says The Hollywood Reporter.
Botha became a social worker in South Africa after witnessing a brutal police assault on a black youth. After befriending the Mandelas during the fight against apartheid, Botha is subjected to phone-tapping, police harassment and house arrest.
Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson are set to play Nelson and Winnie Mandela Darrell Roodt is directing while Michael Mosca and Andre Pieterse will produce.
The Canada/South Africa co-production will shoot in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Robbin Island.
