Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne are all in talks to star in Richard Linklater’s next film “Last Flag Flying,” a semi-sequel to 1973’s Jack Nicholson-led, Oscar-nominated classic “The Last Detail”.
‘Detail’ centered on two Navy men (Nicholson and Otis Young) who are ordered to bring a young offender (Randy Quaid) to prison but decide to show him one last good time along the way.
‘Last Flag’ reunites the reader with the trio, now living a post-9/11 American life: The former Naval petty officers come to the aid of their former prisoner, who needs their help to bring home the body of his son killed in Iraq. The request has them retracing their journey.
Darryl Ponicsan penned both the original 1970 novel “The Last Detail” and the 2005 follow-up “Last Flag Flying” which Linklater previously tried to adapt onto film in 2006 with Nicholson, Quaid and Morgan Freeman in the late Otis Young’s role.
Now, a decade on, the film is finally going ahead with Amazon Studios backing it – Linklater’s first project with the streaming giant. Filming aims to begin in November.
