“Footloose” and “Hustle and Flow” director Craig Brewer is set to direct and write a new film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic character “Tarzan” for Warner Bros. Pictures says the trades.
Jerry Weintraub is producing the project and has been developing it for eight years. John August was originally hired to adapt the script in 2003. In 2006, Guillermo del Toro (“Hellboy”) was in negotiations to direct and two years later Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy”) was in talks to direct a co-write a version with his “G.I. Joe” scribe Stuart Beattie.
According to Deadline, Brewer’s version apparently tells the Tarzan story over three films and he hopes the first one will be his next directing assignment.
