AMC’s zombie drama “The Walking Dead” is known for several things, but one thing it hasn’t really engaged in much is sex. Part of that is AMC’s strange basic cable network standards – extreme graphic violence is fine but strong swearing and nudity is not.
Fan favorite Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) has so far had several intimate relationships in the show, but none of them have ever really been beyond close friendships (most notably with Carol and Beth). Frankly his crossbow gets more action than his other projectile weapon.
He’s also one of the few characters not based on a comic version and so has a background that’s still mysterious and malleable beyond the already established elements of him growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father and a racist older brother (Merle).
Now, “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman has posted a response to a question from a fan asking if Daryl might be gay. The answer might surprise you:
“All I can say is that it’s been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.”
Kirkman was also asked if AMC would be fine with them tackling that topic, to which Kirkman responded “For the record, they absolutely would.”
