Constantine Could Blend With Del Toro Film?

Whilst Marvel has one grand linked universe, DC and Warner Bros. Pictures are keeping things a bit looser when it comes to adaptations of their comic titles. This is especially true of their TV properties with four DC Comics-inspired TV series screening this Fall, but only two of them (“Arrow,” “The Flash”) linked together and none of them tied to any of the upcoming films.

Meanwhile filmmaker Guillermo del Toro continues developing “Dark Universe,” a film along the lines of the New 52 series “Justice League Dark”. Essentially the group is a kind of ‘Justice League’ featuring DC’s most famous supernatural characters – Etrigan the Demon, Deadman, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, The Floronic Man, Shade, etc.

The group itself is led by John Constantine, a character who is being played by Matt Ryan in NBC’s “Constantine”. It has generally been thought that the two projects would be separate, del Toro would deliver his own take on the character with a different actor in the film.

During a recent discussion with IGN, del Toro was asked about the chances of the character The Spectre appearing in the film. During his answer he suggests he’s open to the idea of incorporating the TV series version of John Constantine into his plan:

“I would love to have The Spectre in it, because he’s one of the most..absolutely, beyond moral characters in this universe and he does crazy things…but, I’m happy with…they’re doing that with ‘Constantine.’ What I made clear to them is that the TV series will not affect the movie and they said that’s okay. They said you can have independence. Now, if we see the TV series and we can mesh with it or cast the same actor depending on where the movie is going, I would be happy to consider that.”

The quote comes after comments from DC’s Geoff Johns who seemed pretty adamant that the DC TV properties and the DC Cinematic Universe will stay separate.
