Following the successful opening of the main film series sequel last weekend, New Line is developing another spin-off of its “The Conjuring” franchise.
In 2014 we got “Annabelle,” a spin-off film based on the possessed doll character seen in the opening scenes of the first “The Conjuring”. Now, the demonic nun villain from the second is getting her own spin-off.
David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote the film, has been hired to pen what is being titled “The Nun” with James Wan and Peter Safran reuniting to produce.
Originally the character didn’t exist, the film’s antagonist being a demonic figure with horns. The studio was ready to release it like that, but at the last minute Wan came up with a new concept, a demon nun, which he pitched. Last-minute reshoots then took place in March with Bonnie Aarons playing the character.
“The Conjuring 2” had the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in thirty markets including Australia, Mexico, Brazil, all of Latin America and most markets in Asia – it has already grossed over $100 million worldwide in five days of release.
