“Straight Outta Compton” co-scribe Andrea Berloff will make her directorial debut on the female-driven mob drama “The Kitchen” at New Line.
Based on the Vertigo comic book miniseries, Berloff was already writing the script for Kitchen and impressed studio heads enough they offered her the director’s chair as well.
The Irish mafia story is set in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen in the 1970s. When the FBI does a sweep of the mob, several men are arrested. Their wives end up taking over and run the business much more viciously than the men ever did.
Three major female lead roles are up for grabs in a film that subverts gender tropes and has edge, but also could have quite a bit of commercial appeal.
