A decade ago rapper and actor Common was cast as the John Stewart version of Green Lantern in George Miller’s “Justice League Mortal” film, an ambitious project which fell apart before shooting began.
In the wake of that came the Ryan Reynolds solo “Green Lantern” film which was a famous critical and commercial flop, but already Warners has plans for the character with a new “Green Lantern Corps.” project on the way.
At the same time, Common has become a part of the current DC Extended Universe with a small role as Monster T in David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” last year. Even so, there’s nothing that’s really preventing him from putting his hand up to play John Stewart/Green Lantern in ‘Corps’. Has the actor lost interest? He tells IGN:
“No, I haven’t spoken to DC. John Stewart, the character, is amazing. When I had the opportunity of potentially being John Stewart, when we were working, I learned how he was part of the Green Lantern Corps and all that he was doing. He was kind of community-driven so I felt like, ‘Oh, man, I love this character.’ He used his mind to do a lot of things so I connected with him. I just love the character, but I don’t know, I haven’t talked to DC about it but, you know, hey! Yeah, I would love [to]. That would be an honor to play John Stewart.”
Common will next be seen on screen as the villain opposite Keanu Reeves in “John Wick: Chapter 2” opening February 10th.
