The last of the major movie panels this year was also one of the most anticipated – the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The four films left in Marvel’s Phase Two plans scored panels and footage. Here’s the breakdown by title:
Thor: The Dark World
No panel for this, instead Tom Hiddleston showed up in full Loki costume appeared in character to introduce new footage from the “Thor” sequel.
The clip showcased Sif and the Warriors Three in a fight in a rural village when Thor crash lands and takes on a rock monster.
Other scenes include Jane Foster punching Loki in the face, Odin and Heimdall warning of the coming dark, romance between Thor and Jane both in Asgard and on Earth, and Loki betraying his brother again to the point of seemingly cutting off Thor’s hand.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Emily Van Camp, Samuel L. Jackson and filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo all showed up to promote the ‘Captain’ sequel.
Black Widow is reportedly an integral part of the movie, with her and Steve Rogers having been running missions together for sometime before events in this film begin. As a result, they’re on morally opposite sides and yet there’s a fun “odd couple” style relationship between them. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon is a fellow partner with them.
Jackson talked about the manipulative qualities of Nick Fury, and that “every word that comes out of his mouth is a lie”. Kevin Feige says the film stays fairly close to Ed Brubaker’s “winter soldier” story arc from the comics.
Footage screened included shots of Captain America and Crossbones fighting, Falcon flying, the SHIELD helicarrier crashing, and the Winter Soldier grabbing the Captain’s shield.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Only two weeks of filming have taken place in London so far, yet the cast showed up including Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax The Destroyer), Benicio del Toro (The Collector), Djimon Hounsou (Koranth), Lee Pace (Ronan The Accuser), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and director James Gunn.
Pratt says his character is a jerk who goes around space thinking he’s a charming rogue. Ultimately, he finds a higher calling by joining this team. Bautista says he’s well aware he’s more inexperienced than the rest of the cast, but is learning by working with Gunn and playing off the other actors.
Gillan surprised many as the “Doctor Who” actress showed up with a completely shaved head which is required for the role. del Toro says he hasn’t started filming his scenes yet and the other villains couldn’t really talk about their roles. Hounsou however confirmed his character has a connection to Thanos.
Despite only a few days of footage in the can, a clip was screened which has a much more casual and comedic tone than many expected. John C. Reilly’s character reportedly appears in the clip which also featured Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” as the music. Quite a few have called the clip the highlight of the panel, if not the con.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron
Joss Whedon walked out on stage to announce the title for the sequel which will be called “The Avengers: Age of Ultron”.
