While we know the main characters from last year’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” will be back of the sequel, questions still remain over some of the supporting talent. One such question mark is Benicio Del Toro’s eccentric Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) character.
It’s a role Del Toro says he’s love to reprise, but he has yet to hear anything about whether he’ll get the chance. Speaking with IGN, the actor says:
“I would like to keep working on that character, though. It was kind of like a cameo. I would like to keep developing the character based on what’s written in the comic books. I’d like to see some different sides. I had a blast working with James Gunn and the cast – but it’s not up to me.”
The Collector appeared in both the coda of “Thor: The Dark World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” in scenes that were crucial to revealing Marvel’s overall plan for the Infinity Stones which will play a big part in the upcoming two-part “Avengers: Infinity War” saga.
Del Toro also said that in researching his character for the films, he got guidance from Marvel about where to go:
“[In doing the research] I said, ‘please help me out.’ Because there are big, thick volumes about the characters. So they did point me in the right direction. I learned a lot about the character.
One of the most interesting things that I learned about him is the reasons that he’s collecting. He sees himself as putting together Noah’s Ark. He sees himself as having that responsibility. He’s collecting things, because eventually there’s going to be an apocalypse in the universe and he wants to get things to safety. That’s a really interesting aspect of the character.”
“Guardians of the Galaxy 2” is expected to go before the cameras next year for a 2017 release.
