“Cobra Kai” Gets A Comic Book Prequel

Cobra Kai Gets A Comic Book Sequel

YouTube Premium’s original series “Cobra Kai,” a follow-up to the iconic 1984 film “The Karate Kid,” has become one of the service’s most notable success stories both in terms of acclaim and popularity.

Thus it doesn’t come as much of a shock with news today that IDW Publishing, Overbrook Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Television are teaming up to develop a tie-in comic.

The plan is for “new stories set within the continuity of the YouTube Premium original series, based on iconic characters from the cultural touchstone Karate Kid film series”.

The first project is “Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues” to be written by Denton J. Tipton (“The X-Files”) and illustrated by Kagan McLeod (“Infinite Kung Fu). The story will re-examine the events of the original film from a different perspective – essentially re-telling the story but from Johnny’s POV:

“[Seen] through the eyes of Johnny Lawrence, two-time All Valley Tournament champion. When the new kid makes moves on the girl that broke Johnny’s heart, he vows to settle the score and win back his love…or so goes the story Sensei Lawrence tells his students nearly 35 years later.”

The first issue of “Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues” will hit shelves in October 2019.
