Christoph Waltz is in early negotiations to join the cast of the Robert Rodriguez-directed, James Cameron-produced sci-fi feature “Alita: Battle Angel”.
The project is an ambitious $175-$200 million adaptation of the popular manga series and follows a 26th century cyborg (Rosa Salazar) who is rescued from a scrapyard and reassembled.
Named Alita, she only remembers her training in a deadly martial art and becomes a hunter-warrior who tracks down vicious criminals. Waltz would play Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who finds the cyborg and becomes her mentor.
Cameron and Jon Landau will produce. The project has long been a passion project of Cameron’s but his work on four “Avatar” sequels in the near future prevent him from directing.
“Alita: Battle Angel” aims to begin production this Fall ahead of a July 20th 2018 release.
