Christian Bale To Climb Kormakur’s “Everest”

Christian Bale is in early talks to star in the mountain climbing disaster film “Everest” at Universal Pictures, Working Title and Emmett/Furla Films.

Baltasar Kormakur (“Contraband,” “The Deep”) is set to helm the film which is based on disastrous attempts in 1996 to scale Mount Everest. Three different expeditions were hit by a sudden blinding storm and by the time it was all over, eight climbers died.

The story was made famous by Jon Krakauer’s non-fiction book “Into Thin Air”. The film will use a wider range of sources including several books and eyewitness interviews.

Justin Isbell penned the most recent draft. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, Liza Chasin, and Evan Hayes will produce with Randall Emmett and George Furla also likely coming onboard as co-financiers and producers.

The project is not to be confused with Doug Liman’s “Everest” at Sony Pictures, an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s historical novel “Paths of Glory” to which Tom Hardy is attached. That film deals with the mystery of Sir George Mallory’s ascent in the 1920s.
