Universal is pursuing “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth to play the male lead in “Snow White and the Huntsman” reports Variety.
Scribe Evan Daugherty, director Rupert Sanders and producer Joe Roth are all attached to this version which expands the role of the Huntsman in the fairy tale.
Ordered to take the evil Queen’s stepdaughter Snow White into the woods and kill her, The Huntsman instead lets her go and becomes something of a mentor who teaches her how to fight and survive.
The studio has been trying to lock down a leading man for some time, but the age of their candidates keeps getting younger. Viggo Mortensen (52), Hugh Jackman (42), Joel Edgerton (37) and Tom Hardy (33) have all been offered the role.
Casting 27-year-old Hemsworth though would up the romantic tension but change the tone somewhat. No official offer has been made as yet, though he’s the clear front-runner right now.
His commitment to the currently filming “The Avengers” however may conflict with Universal’s plans as the studio is intent on shooting this Fall to get the film out in time for Xmas 2012.
