CBS Plans Young “MacGyver” Reboot

R. Scott Gemmill (“NCIS: L.A.”) is set to pen the script and executive produce a reimagining of the 1980s TV series “MacGyver” for CBS who has handed out a hefty put-pilot commitment for the project.

Richard Dean Anderson starred in the original ABC series that ran for seven seasons and followed a secret agent with an encyclopedic knowledge of the physical sciences – allowing him to solve complicated problems crafting elaborate things out of ordinary objects.

20th Century Fox Television is behind the new version in which a twenty-something MacGyver gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.

Original series producer Henry Winkler and Michael Clear will executive produce, as will “Saw” and “The Conjuring” filmmaker James Wan who will direct the potential pilot.

An attempt was made to spin-off the property back in 2003 with “Supernatural” star Jared Padalecki playing a young MacGyver – that didn’t go beyond the pilot stage.
