Cavill, Evans, McAvoy To Scale “Everest”?

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”), Luke Evans (“The Hobbit”), Tom Hiddleston (“Thor”), James McAvoy (“X-Men: First Class”), Matthew Goode (“Watchmen”), Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey”), Joel Kinnaman (“Robocop”), and Jim Sturgess (“Upside Down”) are all said to be in the mix to join Doug Liman’s “Everest” project at Sony Pictures.

“Inception” star Tom Hardy was originally slated to take on the role of British mountaineer George Mallory in the film. Mallory disappeared on his third attempt to climb Everest in 1924.

Many think he made it before perishing on the way back down, his corpse staying up on the mountain until 1999.

With Liman determined to begin filming by March, Hardy had to drop out due to scheduling issues.

Benedict Cumberbatch is now the front-runner to replace him, but all those other names are all said to be up for either the Mallory role or that of his Australian rival George Finch.

Sheldon Turner penned the script while Liman, Jennifer Klein, Dave Bartis are producing.

The project is not to be confused with that other “Everest” film that Baltasar Kormakur is directing at Working Title. That movie deals with a disastrous expedition in 1996 during which eight climbers died.
