Cate Blanchett is officially onboard to play Maid Marian alongside Russell Crowe in the Ridley Scott-directed adventure feature “Robin Hood” for Universal Pictures reports the trades.
The $130 million drama, which is aiming for a PG-13 rating, was originally scripted by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris and then rewritten by Brian Helgeland.
The story has evolved into a “Gladiator” version of the Robin Hood legend that hews close to historical facts of the period.
Abandoned as a child, Robin of Loxley (Crowe) finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin’s abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian, a strong, independent woman.
British thesp Sienna Miller was previously attached to the role but exited late last year. Tabloid reports suggested it was due to the age and physical figure difference with Crowe.
Those reports have since become irrelevant as Crowe has been working out hard for months and has slimmed right down for the role, while the pairing with Aussie thesp Blanchett is a better match in every aspect from the physical to the level of acting experience.
Production kicks off early April in the UK. Scott and Brian Grazer are producing.
Grazer said Blanchett was a strong match for Crowe.
