If ABC intends to go forward with a ninth season of long-running procedural “Castle,” it will have to do so without two of its core female characters – namely leading lady Stana Katic who plays Kate Beckett and Tamala Jones as medical examiner Lanie Parish.
The decision was made by ABC and ABC Studios who released the statement: “Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series ‘Castle’ for the past eight years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship. Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful she was a part of ‘Castle.'”
Katic was signed through seven seasons and was considering leaving, ultimately returning this season for a one-year contract after protracted negotiations. Nathan Fillion is expected to return as Rick Castle, but no decision about a pickup has been officially made. Even if it does go forward, the number of episodes that will be produced is also up in the air.
The show has slumped in the ratings this season with Live+3 results giving it a 1.8 rating and 9.1 million viewers. Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter took over as showrunners from creator Andrew Marlowe who stepped down at the end of the seventh season.
