Dern Spielberg Helped Stall The Popular Oscar

Fruitcake
Laura Dern and Will Ferrell will star in the Max Winkler-directed “Fruitcake” at Eclipse Pictures. The project hails from a script by Trey Selman. Dern, Jordan Horowitz, Jayme Lemons, Adam Kolbrenner and Red Sanders will produce.

The pair play Sandy and Kay Jenkins, a seemingly upstanding middle-class couple, who achieved the American dream after Sandy used his job as an accountant to embezzle $17 million from famed Texan fruitcake company Collin Street Bakery. [Source: Deadline]

Girls Night
Brianna Hildebrand (“Deadpool”) and Lana Condor (“To all the Boys I’ve Loved Before”) are attached to star in the female buddy comedy “Girls Night” written by Cristina Kinon and directed by Marianna Palka. Filming begins late summer in New York.

The story follows unlikely best friends, college seniors Alex and Tina, and their adventures over the course of Halloween Night in New York City as they try and track down a lost one-night stand – and figure out what they’re going to do with the rest of their lives. [Source: Deadline]

Best Sellers
Michael Caine is set to star in the comedy “Best Sellers”. Lina Roessler makes her directing debut on the film which hails an original screenplay by Anthony Grieco. Shooting in Canada is scheduled to begin in mid-July.

Caine will play cantankerous, sharp-witted, has-been author whose goal is to live out his days in peace with a bottle of scotch, a cigar and his cat. However, an ambitious young editor embarks on a wild book tour with the author in a last-ditch attempt to save a boutique publishing house. [Source: Variety]

Naked Singularity
Bill Skarsgard (“IT”) is joining John Boyega and Olivia Cooke in “A Naked Singularity” at Scott Free Productions. The project is an adaptation of Sergio De La Pava’s debut novel and follows a successful public defender in New York who starts to question everything after he loses his first case. Chase Palmer is directing from a script by David Matthews. P. Jennifer Dana, Tony Ganz, Ryan Stowell and Kevin J. Walsh are producing. [Source: The Wrap]
