Disney and Marvel’s first female-led superhero feature “Captain Marvel” has landed on short term tracking and is reportedly on course for an opening weekend of $100 million reports Variety.
With three weeks to go, some box office watchers suggest that enthusiastic word of mouth could push that figure considerably higher. However, the sharp industry-wide decline in ticket sales compared to 2018 is tempering expectations.
That figure would put the film on par with “Wonder Woman” which opened to $103 million domestically ahead of a $821 million worldwide haul, and considerably above the last Marvel Studios film “Ant-Man and the Wasp” which opened to $75 million.
The news comes as THR adds that actress Brie Larson’s deal to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and take on the title role in “Captain Marvel” will score her a $5 million payday – $3 million more than what Chadwick Boseman landed for “Black Panther” despite the fact he had already starred in “Captain America: Civil War”.
