The long in the works film adaptation of the popular “Call of Duty” franchise looks to be making serious headway with an update this week from the film’s screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald (“Snowden,” “Wormwood”).
Speaking with Discussing Film, he confirms shooting kicks off in the Spring under the direction of Italian moviemaker Stefano Sollima (“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”). He adds that first casting meetings have already taken place and producers are currently well into the selection process.
Also confirmed is the film is targeting a 2020 or 2021 release. Stacey Sher, Nick van Dyk and Bobby Kotick will produce but no distributor is yet attached.
The game series has sold over 250 million copies worldwide with the most recent entry, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4,” hitting stores earlier this month.
