Buzz Isn’t Helping “Solo” In Its Second Weekend

The hope with “Solo: A Star Wars Story” was that the soft opening over the Memorial Day weekend would be overcome as word of mouth about the film spreads and gets people to check it out. The word of mouth however isn’t doing much it seems.

Despite no competition at all this week, Disney and Lucasfilm’s new spin-off film is headed towards a $25-27 million second weekend – a sharp drop in the 69% range from the $84.4 million it earned in its first three days last weekend.

To put it in perspective, the first spin-off film “Rogue One: A Star Wars” Story” earned $64 million domestically in its second session, dropping 59% from its $155 million opening. Compared to other recent Memorial Day openers, its second weekend drop-off was closer but still steeper – “X-Men: Days of Future Past” fell 62%, “Fast and Furious 6” dropped 63%, and “X-Men: Apocalypse” dropped 65%.

“Solo” will still easily win this weekend though as the Shailene Woodley-led yacht survival drama “Adrift,” the low-budget sci-fi throwback thriller “Upgrade,” and the Johnny Knoxville vehicle “Action Point” are expected to earn $11 million, $3 million and just under $2 million respectively.

“Deadpool 2” is expected to take second place with a projected $17-19 million in North America.
