Burton’s Rep Denies “Beetlejuice” Sequel

Here we go again.

This morning there was great excitement as Tim Burton himself seemingly confirmed that a “Beetlejuice” sequel was going forward. The quote at Showbiz Spy, which apparently came from a second-hand source rather than a direct interview, alleges Burton said:

“The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona [Ryder] and Michael [Keaton]. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.”

Now though, a representative for the director has denied the claim. The rep tells The Independent:

“Tim Burton did not confirm ‘Beetlejuice 2’ as the movie is not in development. Tim’s focus is entirely on ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’ set for a September 30th release and developing ‘Dumbo.'”

So is it just spin? Warner Bros. did indeed hire David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith to work on a sequel. Both Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton have effectively confirmed their participation when asked in interviews, but how far along the project actually is remains very much in question.
