A couple of brief sequel updates today. First up, Victoria Mahoney (“Power,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) is joining J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: Episode IX” as a second unit director.
This will make her the first woman (and first woman of color) to step behind the camera in that capacity for a “Star Wars” movie. Second unit directors lead a crew to capture additional footage, such as establishing shots and stunts.
Next up, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has revealed he’s open to the possibility of directing the “Man of Steel” sequel. Asked if he would consider it, he responded on Twitter: “They know where to find me.”
The director is putting the finishing touches on “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” which includes current big screen Superman star Henry Cavill in its cast. “Kingsman” helmer Matthew Vaughn has previously expressed interest in directing the project.
Finally actress/singer-songwriter Nina Bergman has tweeted that she’s joined the cast of a new film adaptation of the “Doom” video game series and says she’s working with a director who is “an actors director, not scared of taking chances, thinks outside the box, writes crazy cool female characters and dialog”. Filming apparently kicks off soon in Bulgaria but there’s been no word from other sources on such a project.
