Brian De Palma Takes On Therese Raquin

Brian De Palma is setting up a loose adaptation of Emile Zola’s “Therese Raquin” at SBS Productions.

Emily Mortimer will play the lead in the project, which features both period and contemporary elements.

It also sounds quite meta as it follows a film director and two actors trying to shoot a movie version of Zola’s novel, and soon finding it reflecting their own life experience.

The classic book itself follows a young woman sent to live with her aunt. Stuck in an arranged marriage with her cousin, she soon finds passion with his best friend.

The news comes the same week as a more straight up adaptation, “Therese” starring Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac, premiered in Toronto.
