Breaking Bad Finale Scores Big Ratings

The only thing everyone’s talking about this morning is last night’s “Breaking Bad” finale, and it’s easy to see why.

Ratings for the finale have just come in with the extended 75-minute episode averaging 10.3 million viewers during its original 9pm broadcast. It also scored 6.7 million viewers in the key adults 18-49 demographic, making it the night’s strongest performer.

That’s a record for the series, and beaten only by “The Walking Dead” as AMC’s most-watched original broadcast to date. It’s also significantly up on the 6.6 million viewers who tuned in to see the penultimate episode live.

Showtime also had a good night last night with the third season premiere of “Homeland” scoring 1.9 million viewers (up 9% on the S2 premiere). New series “Masters Of Sex” also debuted to 1 million viewers, the same number “Homeland” itself debuted to three years ago.

In comparison, other shows last night looked a bit anaemic with double digit declines across the board compared with last season’s premieres. These include: “American Dad” (-16%), “Bob’s Burgers” (-19%), “The Good Wife” (-20%), “The Mentalist” (-20%), “Family Guy” (-21%), “Revenge” (-25%), “The Simpsons” (-26%), and “Once Upon A Time” (-33%).

One new network drama, “Betrayal,” opened on ABC to a woeful 1.5 rating and 4 million viewers. That is tied with the quickly cancelled “Red Widow” as ABC’s lowest in-season Sunday debut ever, and will probably be one of the season’s first cancellations.
