“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” actor John Boyega has been cast in Kathryn Bigelow’s untitled Detroit Riots project for Annapurna Pictures.
The crime drama is Bigelow’s first film since 2012’s “Zero Dark Thirty” and sees her re-teaming with frequent collaborator Mark Boal who’ll pen the script.
The ensemble piece is set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five summer days in 1967, with the film seeking to explore the systemic racism in the city.
Bigelow, Boal, Megan Ellison, Colin Wilson and Matthew Budman will produce. Filming will kick off this summer in Detroit and Boston with the aim for a 2017 release.
