Boyega: “Episode VIII” Is “Bigger,” “Darker”

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” star John Boyega was in Cannes last night receiving an award and briefly talked with Variety about Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII” which is currently in production and which he had to return to the set of right away.

The interviewer came off strange, asking him about the “evolving romance” of Rey and Finn to which he shot her down right away: “We didn’t establish a romance in seven; we never played it that way…Finn and Rey – they’re just friends.” He also says don’t expect a romance to blossom either as their relationship “is not going to go the way you think it’s going to go.”

Asked about working with Johnson, he says: “It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: “How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?'” But it’s crazy.” In related news, Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver have all reportedly landed in Belfast in the last few days to shoot scenes at Malin Head in County Donegal.

BBC News reported on the casting appearances, saying that the group are shooting scenes around a familiar looking structure which has been under construction there – the Millennium Falcon.

This has led to speculation that the film will see Luke in showdown with his former student and nephew, the man who was once Ben Solo. Production has mainly been taking place at Pinewood Studios in England.
