The first estimates for the July 4th weekend are in with “Finding Dory” set to stay on top for a third weekend with a $50 million-plus haul over the four-day weekend.
Newcomers “The Purge: Election Year” and “The Legend of Tarzan” will battle it out for second and third with both expected to have openings in the $30-37 million range, while Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG” will come in fourth with a disappointing $25 million.
If there’s a stark difference here it’s budget. The third “Purge” film comes in at a budget of $10 million, compared to the $180 million of ‘Tarzan’ and $140 million of ‘BFG’. Spielberg’s film has been the best reviewed even if those positives have been soft, while ‘Purge’ has scored a mixed response and ‘Tarzan’ is being widely dismissed.
Fox’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” looks to be coming in second with $20 million for the weekend, down from the already soft $41 million opening last weekend.
