The star power of Melissa McCarthy helped her new R-rated comedy “The Boss” to narrowly push “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” from the top spot at the weekend box office.
Overcoming utterly scathing critical reviews and a terrible C+ CinemaScore which paint the film as one of the year’s worst, ‘Boss’ made an estimated $23.5 million on its opening weekend – just ahead of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” which pulled in a further $23.4 million to bring that film’s domestic total to $296.7 million so far.
The weekend’s other new wide release was STX Entertainment’s first person perspective feature “Hardcore Henry”. That film earned a mere $5.1 million for a fifth place finish, only half of the reported $10 million the distributor payed to score the rights following its Toronto premiere last year.
Disney’s “Zootopia” came in third with $14.5 million which pushed its total to $296.2 million after six weeks. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” came in fourth with $6.4 million which brought its total to $46.7 million after three weeks.
