Boseman Talks “Black Panther” Casting

As part of its new ‘Actors on Actors’ video series in the lead up to awards season, Variety is getting numerous thesps to interview their peers. In a new clip, “Fury” actor Logan Lerman is interviewing “42” star Chadwick Boseman when the topic of Boseman’s casting as Marvel’s Black Panther came up.

Boseman says the solo “Black Panther” film due for release in 2017 doesn’t have a helmer yet:

“There’s a director on the movies that I’m introduced, but not for ‘Black Panther’. Just being a part of that discussion is huge. You’re reading the comic books and you have ideas about how that’s gonna happen and you can discuss that.”

It’s the use of the word “movies” there that raises eyebrows. It’s known that Boseman will appear in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” but the plural suggests there may be more than one pre-solo film appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ahead for the actor. Could he make a cameo in “Avengers: Age of Ultron”?

Bozeman also spoke about his enthusiasm for his new gig:

“I’m excited about it too!. Beyond excited, it’s like to the point where you feel numb and then your mind goes off into, ‘Ok, how do I achieve that?’ The great thing about it is that the actual character is unique in a lot of ways. I can’t think of another character that’s like the leader of a nation and is a superhero at the same time. There are a lot of different ways this story can go, ways that they can do it, so I’m really just excited about how it fits into the bigger picture of what Marvel is doing.”
