Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Pictures company have launched an independent TV studio with significant investment from the UK’s ITV Studios, the latter having a 45% stake in the new initiative.
The plan is to finance and produce original series, both scripted and unscripted, with the content being dubbed ‘dark genre’ fare. Two projects have been set – the first being Showtime’s previously announced limited series “Secure and Hold” about former FOX News CEO Roger Ailes and his public fall from grace last year. Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”) is shepherding the film.
The second project will be a TV series based on “The Purge” franchise which Blumhouse and Universal Cable Productions are developing for both Syfy and USA Network. Creator James DeMonaco will oversee the series with the cross-genre show airing on both USA and Syfy.
This follows on from Blumhouse’s TV division launch in 2012 which led to Emy-winning HBO projects “The Jinx” and “The Normal Heart”. As part of the new deal, Blumhouse TV and ITV Studios Global Entertainment will look to partner on the global distribution of future projects.
