Blumhouse Develops A “Magic 8 Ball” Movie

Blumhouse Develops 8 Magic Ball Movie

Mattel Films and Blumhouse Productions are developing a film based on the classic 1950s fortune-telling toy “Magic 8 Ball” with “Kick-Ass 2” and “Truth or Dare” director Jeff Wadlow attached to helm and script with collaborators Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach.

The device contains a white 20-sided die floating in blue-tinted alcohol. Each of the die’s 20 faces has a brief message – ten affirmative, five negative, and five non-committal – read through a window on the ball’s bottom. The replies are to be looked at after asking the ball a yes-no question.

The project marks Mattel Films’ first partnership with an independent studio – Universal and Paramount were previously linked to the project in 2006 and 2010 respectively.

Mattel Films is also developing features based on the Barbie, Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, American Girl and View Master brands.
