Blackhat Ditches Australian Release Plans

Following the disastrous debut of Michael Mann’s “Blackhat” at the North American box-office, Universal Pictures International has opted not to release the film theatrically in Australia according to the Australian Associated Press.

This is a bit of a blow considering the film is lead by local actor Chris Hemsworth. The $70 million budget movie was originally slated to open in Australia on February 25th release, but the tenth place opening in the United States with just $4 million dollars in revenue may have had a big impact on the decision.

In the film, Hemsworth plays a convicted hacker who helps a Chinese and American taskforce track down a cyberterrorist. UPI will now release the movie straight-to-disc, though a release date has not yet been specified.
